About Us
Randwick City Tourism Incorporated, as it is now known, was first established at a public meeting held in the Randwick Town Hall in December, 1990.
It was formed as a result of a community recognition that tourism played a major part in the economic wellbeing of the Randwick City area and that employment opportunities generated by tourism in the City were a key element to the future prosperity and quality of life of local residents, particularly the younger members of the community.
The formation of the Randwick City Leisure and Tourism Association (as it was then known) was also triggered by the publishing of the Randwick Tourism Development Plan - Green Randwick. This Plan encapsulated the tourist assets which Randwick City had to offer and the opportunities which were available and could emanate from the effective management of tourism in the area.
Following the Public Meeting, an Executive Steering Committee was formed whose role was to engender interest in membership by the local tourist sector. Many prominent local businesses and organisations have joined the Association including:-
- Randwick City Council
- The Australian Jockey Club
- The University of New South Wales
- Crown Plaza - Coogee Beach
- Coogee Bay Hotel
- Clovelly Hotel
- The Gemini Hotel, Sydney
In addition, a host of smaller local tourist operators, accommodation houses and businesses joined the Association. The Association also welcomed membership from private individuals who had an interest in tourism in the City. Its moderate membership fees remained constant for many years.
The Association is a non-profit organisation with a duly registered constitution and has a tax exempt status with the Australian Taxation Office for the publication of tourism brochures and ancillary promotional material. Its also a member of the NSW Council of Tourist Associations and has active links with Tourism NSW.
It has no paid employees with all members of the Executive Committee serving on a purely voluntary basis and meeting on the first Monday of each month.
Annual General Meetings are held each November, at which time all offices are declared vacant and a new Executive is elected for the forthcoming year.
The Association, over the years, has produced a series of promotional tools with a visitor/tourist focus to engender interest in Randwick City which included:-
- A coloured tourism brochure listing places of interest, activities available and accommodation and entertainment venues.
- The first Coastal Walkway brochure which included a map and commentary on Randwick's Coastal Walkway.
- A Prime Picks Listing.
- A brochure entitled Tourism Working for Randwick City which outlines the benefits which can be derived from tourism in the area.
- A quality video which runs for 5 minutes 30 seconds and which displays the tourism assets of the City.
- Car bumper stickers still seen on vehicles to this day.
Randwick Tourism seeks out marketing opportunities to promote Randwick City as a desirable destination and which will create an economic benefit for local businesses and generate employment opportunities.
Its tourism brochures have been forwarded to all Tourist Information Centres throughout New South Wales, it has a listing in the White Pages Telephone Book, it forwarded its video and brochures to the Atlanta (USA) Olympic Games Information Centre during the promotion of Sydney as the 2000 Olympics venue, it has conducted familiarisation tours of local accommodation houses, it undertakes advertising periodically in rural centres to encourage day or extended trips to Randwick, it has participated in tourism trade exhibitions, it has supplied editorial and photographic material to tourist focussed publications including various NRMA guides, Gregorys 200 km Around Sydney publication, the annual Discover the Wonders of Sydney booklet, it has arranged local tourism seminars, it responds to tourist information enquiries received over the telephone, it services tourist information brochure racks at Coogee and Maroubra Beaches and the spot shopping centre.
Through all these mediums Randwick City Tourism strives to incorporate a high level of excellence by providing quality and prompt responses to all enquiries received. Nothing is ever too much trouble, irrespective of the nature or volume of enquiries received. Our business is to promote Randwick City and this can only be achieved in one way - providing quality service which will encourage a first visit to the area and will be followed by further return journeys.
Randwick City Tourism has a meaningful presence in the local area. It is unique as it is the only Tourism Association operating in Sydney's Eastern Suburbs. Accordingly, it is the only body lobbying for the continued enhancement of tourist related facilities and serving as an organisation which represents the interests of all facets of the local tourism industry.
One achievement of which Randwick City Tourism Incorporated is particularly proud is that it was successful in causing the Bondi and Bay Explorer bus service to traverse Coogee and this has put Randwick City on the tourism map. In fact, on its inaugural journey to Coogee, passengers on the Explorer service were greeted by Executive Members from Randwick Tourism with champagne and a memento gift of the occasion.
Randwick City Tourism Inc was also instrumental in the formation of the South Eastern Councils Tourism Alliance which comprised of Mayoral or Deputy Mayoral representatives from Sydney City, Woollahra, Waverley and Randwick Councils and which had a focus on the management of tourism in those Local Government areas. Randwick Tourism had its President and Vice President serving on that Alliance.
Having a high level of commitment to the local community, Randwick Tourism is ever mindful of the fact that tourism is a two-way street. Many benefits of a financial nature flow from the almighty tourist dollar, but Randwick Tourism does not see this as the "bee-all". Local residents should not be disadvantaged in any unreasonable way from tourism. This is where effective management of tourism is a crucial component of the tourism scenario. Randwick Tourism strives to ensure that there are many more tangible benefits than dis-benefits in this process. It is very mindful that a poor response from the community to tourism can have a negative impact. For this reason it published a fact sheet entitled Tourism Working for Randwick City. This flyer spells out clearly to local residents that everyone does in fact benefit from tourism facilities and expenditure. The brochure concludes by stating "Randwick City Tourism Inc - Promoting Tourism and Employment in Randwick City".
Whilst Randwick City Tourism Inc does not have any paid employees, it has a dedicated core of individuals serving as members on its Executive Committee. Their professionalism in this area cannot be disputed and their record of achievement for a voluntary group will stand any scrutiny.
And Randwick City Tourism Inc has not been standing idle. In recent years it has:-
- Produced nine short videos on a DVD offering a taste of some of the activities available on the Sports Coast.
- Initiated the annual Sports Coast Photo Competition.
- Published three (3) promotional brochures.
- Produced a video on Randwick City's Coastal Walkway.
- Established an Internet site for Randwick City which is currently linked to all members' facilities.
